Air Force satellite work goes to General Dynamics

General Dynamics Corp. won a $22.5 million subcontract to provide information assurance, systems engineering, payload and ground element support and logistics to an Air Force space communications program.

General Dynamics C4 Systems unit won the work from the Boeing Co., one of two prime contractors on the Air Force Transformational Communications Milsatcom Space Segment program.

The program is part of an effort to provide a secure, high-capacity global communications network for the Defense Department, NASA and intelligence agencies. Boeing of Chicago and a team led by Lockheed Martin Corp. of Bethesda, Md., have been contracted to develop a systems design and demonstrate technologies for the network.

The win "provides a venue for General Dynamics to team with Boeing to advance the Air Force's transformation vision in an emerging globally connected world," said Ron Taylor, a senior vice president and general manager of General Dynamics C4 Systems.

General Dynamics of Falls Church, Va., had 2003 revenue of $16.6 billion, and was ranked No. 7 on Washington Technology's 2003 Top 100 list, which measures federal government contracting. The 2004 list will be released in May.
