Chapman, CIO at HHS, to join Booz Allen

Melissa Chapman will step down as the CIO of the Health and Human Services Department Oct. 17.

She plans to take a position with Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., an HHS spokesman said today.

Chapman will be a senior associate involved with systems work supporting initiatives in health care and homeland security, said a spokesman for Booz Allen in McLean, Va. She starts Nov. 1.

Chapman, who has been deputy assistant secretary for IRM and CIO since June of last year, has led development of an HHS enterprise architecture and standards to create a federal health architecture.

"Melissa Chapman provided extensive leadership in the pursuit of collaborative efforts to promote the effective use of IT in support of health practice," said John Teeter, associate director for IT architecture at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Teeter has been working with Chapman on the federal health architecture.

Kathleen Heuer will assume Chapman's duties as acting CIO in addition to her current position as deputy assistant secretary for performance and planning

Prior to becoming CIO, Chapman held several senior management positions over 11 years at HHS' Food and Drug Administration, including stints at the Center for Drug Evaluation Research, Center for Biologic Evaluation and Research, and in the Office of the Commissioner. She spearheaded development of FDA's e-commerce systems for review of drug applications.

Chapman has a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
