California taps Maximus to run healthcare programs

Maximus Inc. has been notified by California that the state will award the company a $418.4 million contract for two key health services programs, the company announced today.

The California Management Risk Medical Insurance Board is awarding the five-year contract, which will run through Dec. 31, 2008, and has two one-year options. The contract is scheduled for signing next month, according to the company.

Under the contract, Maximus of Reston, Va., will receive and process applications for the Healthy Families and Access for Infants and Mothers programs, as well as screen applicants for potential Medicaid eligibility. The company also will enroll applicants in the plan of their choice and conduct annual eligibility reviews and changes.

Maximus plans to provide customer service in 11 languages through a toll-free call center and mailings in an effort to educate Californians about the various program options and to assist in the eligibility process.

Maximus, a provider of program management, consulting and information technology services to state and local government, has 5,300 employees and annual sales of $518 million, according to Hoover's Online of Austin, Texas.
