NSA could expand Groundbreaker seat contract

The National Security agency is considering expanding its Groundbreaker seat management contract with Computer Sciences Corp., an agency official said.

CSC holds a 10-year, $2 billion contract to provide desktop PCs to most NSA offices in the Washington area.

But NSA could expand the geographic scope of the contract to facilities outside the Washington area, the official said, indicating that the initial scale of the Groundbreaker pact was intended to test the viability of an even larger pact.

The agency also could consider outsourcing its server farms, but likely would not move the server farms away from its Fort Meade, Md., headquarters, the official said.

NSA has accelerated its pace of outsourcing on a try-before-you-buy approach, in which the agency asks vendors to create prototypes of systems for evaluation, the official said.
