Motorola, M/A-Com to battle for N.Y. wireless network

Two leading providers of government communications systems are facing off against each other for the opportunity to provide a next-generation wireless network for New York state.

Motorola Inc. of Schaumberg, Ill., and M/A-Com Inc. of Lowell, Mass., have submitted bids as prime contractors leading teams competing for the 8-year, $400 million New York statewide wireless network project, state officials told Washington Technology this week. Bids were due Jan. 7.

The team led by Motorola includes Harris Corp., Lockheed Martin Corp., TRW Inc. (now part of Northrop Grumman Corp.), Bechtel Corp., Baran Telecom Inc., IBM Corp., GDP Telecom Inc., Vytek Public Safety Solutions Inc., Buford Goff and Associates and Parsons Brinckerhoff.

The M/A-Com-led team includes General Dynamics Corp., Verizon Inc., Alcatel USA Inc., Black and Veatch, Sun Microsystems Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., LA Group, Niagara Mohawk, Intergraph Inc. and Bear Stearns.

The contract is tentatively scheduled for award June 3, state officials said, noting the winning team will start work on the project before the end of the year.
