Vredenburg lands ex-Navy CIO Dan Porter

Immediately after he steps down as the Navy's chief information officer, Dan Porter will join government contractor Vredenburg Co. to help expand the company's presence in key markets, such as homeland security and information management.

Porter, who retires Dec. 1 from the Navy, will join Vredenburg Dec. 2 as senior vice president for strategic development, the Reston, Va.-based company announced Nov. 22.

"I have known Dan for more than 20 years, and am well-aware of his expertise, leadership and integrity," said Chick Baboyian, Vredenburg President and chief executive officer. "Dan Porter is a recognized leader in strategic planning and management in areas that match up perfectly with Vredenburg's core competencies."

As the Navy CIO, Porter was in charge of such large projects as the $6.9 billion Navy-Marine Corps Intranet and the Defense Department's Smart Card and Common Access Card deployment. He also led the Navy's $5.6 billion annual information technology budget and infrastructure assurance and acquisition reform initiatives.

Before assuming CIO duties in 1990, Porter held senior management positions at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters.

Employing more than 300 people, Vredenburg focuses on providing project management and engineering solutions to Defense Department and civilian agencies, including critical infrastructure protection services, weapons systems acquisition support and financial and engineering management.
