Unisys gets $252 million Pa. outsourcing extension

Unisys Corp. has won a three-year, $252 million contract extension from Pennsylvania to continue managing the outsourced operation and maintenance of the state's data center facility, the Pennsylvania Office of Administration announced Oct. 14.

The contract extension is estimated to save the state $31 million, Pennsylvania officials said. These savings are in addition to the estimated $110 million it already expects to save over the life of the seven-year contract.

The original contract, which is valued at $621 million, started in August 1999 and included provisions for one three-year extension. With this extension, the contract will run through 2009.

Unisys leads a consortium of 10 companies that manage Pennsylvania's Data PowerHouse project. It houses mainframe computers, midrange computers and other technology, which agencies use to process data for a number of state government services.

In addition to continuing the outsourcing relationship, the extension includes delivery of new technology and services for enhanced disaster recovery capabilities for critical public services supported by the facility.

Unisys of Blue Bell, Pa., has more than 38,900 employees and annual revenue of $6 billion, according to Hoover's Online of Austin, Texas.
