ITT Industries Inc., White Plains, N.Y., won a $113 million contract from TRW Inc., Cleveland, to produce three space-based weather-measurement instruments. The work comes under TRW's Aug. 23 $4 billion win from the Department of Commerce, Department of Defense and NASA to build the nation's next-generation meteorological satellite system.
The instruments, known as the Cross Track Infrared Sounders, will help weather forecasters improve predictions by measuring temperature and moisture in the earth's atmosphere.
The instruments are scheduled to be in orbit by 2006 and will be part of the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System, being built by TRW in conjunction with Raytheon Co., Lexington, Mass.
