Work of heart: Pictures from Sept. 11 to today
After a year of continuous construction, the section of the Pentagon destroyed Sept. 11, 2001, stands ready to reopen officially on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

 | March 2001 - Just six months before the attack, officials showed the first newly renovated sections of Wedge 1, completed as part of the Pentagon's modernization. |
 | Sept. 12, 2001 - One day after the attack, the west wall of the Pentagon lies in ruins as search and rescue operations continue. |
 | June 2002 - On June 11, the last limestone block was put in place, completing work on the exterior of the Pentagon. Interior work on tenant space, information technology and telecommunications, already about 20 percent finished, picked up. New radial corridors (far right) provide additional avenues of escape for employees. |
 | August 2002 - On Aug. 15, the first 22 tenants return to the E ring, the Pentagon's outermost ring and the point of impact during the terrorist attack. |
 | Today - Construction crews finish work on the Wedge 1 entrance at the heart of the restored façade of the Pentagon's west wall. |
