Michigan Tunes in Motorola for Radio Upgrade

Motorola Inc. has won a $20.2 million contract to upgrade Michigan's public safety radio communications system with the company's latest two-way radio platform, the company announced Nov. 12.

The upgrade of the Michigan Public Safety Communications System will be completed by November 2002, the company said.

Motorola of Schaumburg, Ill., is already upgrading the communications system in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Once that is completed, the company will upgrade the sites in the Lower Peninsula.

The upgrade will allow state and local government personnel equipped with radios statewide to communicate with each other during events such as disasters, emergencies, pursuits and other operations involving multiple jurisdictions.

Michigan state and local governments have 8,000 radios that operate on the statewide public safety radio communications system.

Motorola has more than 147,000 employees and annual sales of $37.6 billion.
