RSA Security Inc. of Bedford, Mass., acquired privately held 3G International Inc. of Springfield, Va., for $12 million.

RSA specializes in security software and hardware, including smart-card applications. 3GI manufactures security and authentication products.

The acquisition extends RSA's position in the authentication market, said John Worrall, RSA's director of product management. Worrall said the federal government will be one of the largest adopters of smart-card technology in the future. Picking up 3GI's products and its engineers will further enhance RSA's position in the marketplace.

RSA has more than 1,200 employees, Worrall said, while 3GI employs about 30 people.
