Compaq Wins Pair of Texas State Contracts

Compaq Computer Corp. has won contracts with two Texas state agencies totaling $25 million for desktop computers and related services, the company said June 14.

Compaq of Houston signed a four-year, $20 million contract for desktop and related services with the Texas Department of Transportation, and a six-year contract worth $5 million in the first year for similar equipment and services with the Texas Office of the Attorney General.

Compaq did not provide an estimate of the total value of the attorney general office contract.

The contracts were signed with Compaq's local area reseller, Texas Electronic Information and Computer Corp., also based in Houston.

Compaq will provide 14,000 desktops to the transportation department and 5,000 desktops to the attorney general's office. Compaq Global Services will service the computers over the life of the contracts.

"Our reseller partners ... deliver a lot of value to Compaq by helping us to extend our reach within the marketplace," said Jim Weynand, Compaq vice president of government and education markets. "The fact that they are a minority reseller gives us an added advantage."

Compaq had about 94,600 employees and sales of $42.3 billion in fiscal 2000, according to Hoover's Online of Austin, Texas.
