Verizon Wins $45 Million Treasury Contract

Verizon Communications Inc. won a five-year, $45 million contract from the Treasury Department for maintenance and support of the agency's voice communications network in the Washington area.

Verizon of New York announced the award May 24.

The contract is known as Digital Telecommunications Switching System 2. It connects Treasury's headquarters with its bureaus and offices in Washington and the Maryland and Virginia suburbs, some 50 locations and approximately 35,000 employees.

Under the contract, Verizon is responsible for management of the Treasury Department's network to minimize technology obsolescence, provide the department with greater control over communications services and improve access to new technologies.

The company also will provide comprehensive network monitoring services to analyze cable plant and switching facilities, to ensure that adequate network capacity and facilities are available for Treasury employees.

This is the first communications contract awarded under the Treasury Communications Enterprise initiative to improve, streamline and simplify the management of Treasury Department information technology programs. The initiative is to provide the agency with the communications infrastructure needed for its mission-critical operations. Other contracts will be put for bid as older contracts expire.
