Science Applications International Corp. has won two contracts worth a total of $75.8 million with the Department of Defense to plan and manage advanced information technology and telecommunications in the twenty-first century battlefield, the company said May 30.
SAIC of San Diego will lead industry teams responsible for developing and supporting the Defense Department's Joint Network Management System.
One contract is for the design, development and fielding of the system, and the other is for technical support services, including training, testing, field support and software maintenance.
The two contracts are scheduled to run concurrently. SAIC expects to have the contracts completed by Oct. 16, 2008.
The system will allow military commanders to plan and manage the diverse array of legacy and advanced information technologies and telecommunications systems throughout the battlefield shared by the military services. It will cover the joint task force backbone, military and commercial satellite systems and service-unique systems.
The program executive office for command, control and communications systems will serve as the executive office for the contract, while the Army Communication-Electronics Command will serve as the acquisition activity. Both are located at Fort Monmouth, N.J.
SAIC competed against teams for the contracts. One was led by AT&T Corp., of New York, and the other was led by Logicon Inc. of Herndon, Va., and General Dynamics Corp. of Falls Church, Va.
SAIC's team includes Telcordia Technologies, Morristown, N.J.; TRW Inc., Cleveland; DynCorp., Reston, Va.; LMGT Inc., Clarksburg, Md.; TEI Inc., Severna Park, Md.; Solers Inc., Arlington, Va.; INS Inc., Ivyland, Pa.; Lucille Maud Corp., Trenton, N.J.; and Arrowhead Inc., Falls Church.
SAIC's design will emphasize the use of off-the-shelf products that support emerging information technologies, said Gerald Anderson, SAIC group senior vice president and manager of the contract program team.
