Unisys Catches Police Job

Unisys Corp. of Blue Bell, Pa., won a $2.7 million contract to provide a mobile data communications system to the Jefferson County, Ala., Sheriff's Department.

Unisys will deliver 165 mobile Panasonic laptops that will be installed in deputy sheriffs' patrol cars, said officials of Unisys' Justice and Public Safety Practice.

The system will provide access to federal, state and local criminal information databases. The system eventually will allow officers to complete reports at the incident's site, which will improve accuracy and reduce redundant data entry on the back end, said the sheriff's department.

Other major components of the system include mobile software provided by Aether Systems Inc. of Owings Mills, Md., and a wireless data network from Dataradio Corp. of Atlanta.
