SRA Wins $77 Million Order for Health Databanks

SRA International Inc. has received a six-year, $77 million task order to operate, maintain and enhance the National Practitioner Data Bank and the Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank for the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, the company announced today.

Under this task order, SRA of Fairfax, Va., will provide software development, systems engineering and testing and operations services to manage and maintain the databanks.

The task order was awarded through the Department of Transportation's governmentwide Information Technology Omnibus Procurement II contract.

SRA designed and implemented the NPDB and has operated it since 1994. This national database tracks malpractice settlements, exclusions and adverse actions taken against more than 160,000 doctors, dentists and other health care practitioners. It provides the information to health care entities, hospitals, professional societies and state licensing boards.

The fee-for-query database processes more than 3 million transactions per year, is accessible via the Internet to authorized users and generates more than $12 million annually in government revenue.

SRA also designed, implemented and has managed the HIPDB since its was established in 1999. It also is a fee-for-query system, providing information on health care-related fraud and abuse, and helps track and eliminate fraud.

HIPDB processes up to 25,000 queries each week and will generate about $4 million for the government in its first full year of operation.
