OCT. 3-San Diego-based Xmarc Inc., a provider of infrastructure software solutions for wireless and Web-enabled companies, announced Oct. 2 it has signed an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation to develop an online permit routing system for intrastate truck travel.

The purpose of the Web Enabled Permit Routing System is to simplify issuing and obtaining permits and routing maps for oversize and overweight vehicles on Florida highways. Businesses and organizations that require intrastate transportation permits will be able to obtain them in real time on the Internet rather than in two weeks through the mail.

The work will be performed under a cooperative research and development agreement, said company officials. The value of the agreement was not disclosed.

Under the agreement, Xmarc and Florida will collaborate on system design, software development and system implementation throughout the six project phases. The agreement places special emphasis on the development of an automated and interactive visualization of road systems and hazards.

The system will be enabled by Xmarc's Wireless & Internet Infrastructure Software Environment platform, which allows clients to deliver customized applications to a variety of devices, including mobile phones, personal digital assistants and personal computers.
