PEC Solutions Buys Viking Technology, Eyes State and Local Expansion

AUG. 30 - PEC Solutions Inc. of Fairfax, Va., a professional services firm, is acquiring Viking Technology, a move that will expand the company's position in the state and local government market, company officials said Aug. 29.

Viking, also of Fairfax, provides integrated software products and advanced technology solutions to state and local law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service agencies. As a result of the deal, Viking is now a wholly owned subsidiary of PEC Solutions. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

"The acquisition of Viking Technology provides the company a software product-oriented division serving state and local public safety entities across the nation, enhances our reputation as one of the nation's top government technology providers and will accelerate growth in the state and local market," said David C. Karlgaard, PEC's president and chief executive.

Currently, ninety-five percent of PEC's revenue comes from sales in the federal marketplace and the other 5 percent from the state and local marketplace, said John McNeilly, PEC's manager of corporate communications and investor relations.

PEC Solutions has more than 500 employees and reported $53.2 million in annual sales for fiscal 1999.

PEC Solutions specializes in Web-enabling government. Its services include designing and implementing security systems, intranet and Internet software, online database applications and integrating legacy systems with new technology.

The company's federal customers include the Census Bureau, Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice. Law enforcement agencies account for about 35 percent of its revenue, according to Hoover's Online of Austin, Texas.
