Hawley Tapped as North Carolina's Next CIO

AUG. 3 ? Richard Hawley has been appointed by North Carolina Gov. Jim Hunt (D) to serve as the state's new chief information officer.


Hawley will oversee the Office of Information Technology Services, the agency that provides computing, telecommunications and other technical services to state and local governments and educational institutions throughout the state.


Hawley, who is chief operating officer at ITS, replaces Rick Webb, who recently accepted a position as managing director of State and Local Government Consulting at PricewaterhouseCooper LLP of New York.


Before joining ITS, Hawley served as the acting CIO of North Carolina's Department of Justice and as assistant director with the state Bureau of Investigation, where he managed the Division of Criminal Information.


"Ron's experience in information technology and understanding of state government will be a tremendous asset to the Office of Information Technology Services," said Hunt. "Ron will continue to build upon the excellent progress we have made in how we view, manage and implement technology in our state."


ITS took a leadership role in the development of the NC @ Your Service state portal unveiled by Hunt Aug. 1. The new Web site makes government services and information more accessible to the public and business community. Beginning in September, North Carolina citizens will be able to renew their vehicle registrations through the Internet.
