MAY 30 ? Everything you need to know about TechiesDay 2000, a nationwide initiative planned for Oct. 3 that will address the increasing demand for a qualified technical work force, can now be found online at www.techiesday.org.

The site, which officially launched May 30, seeks to unite and excite students, teachers, technology professionals and corporations, as well as government, community and industry associations for the event. TechiesDay issues a challenge for businesses and government to partner with the nation's schools to help respond to the rising demand for skilled technology workers.

"The Department of Commerce calls this gap 'America's New Deficit,' " said Doug Berg, co-founder and chief techie at techies.com inc., Edina, Minn. "Finding a solution to tomorrow's problems lies in reaching out today to students K-12, helping them to learn more about this exciting and challenging profession," he said.

Techies.com, which connects techies with the people who want them, along with CNET Networks, Inc., San Francisco, is the co-sponsor of TechiesDay 2000. Other event sponsors include the IT consulting company GartnerGroup of Stamford, Conn.

Last year's site had more than 100,000 registrants and received more than 1 million hits on TechiesDay.
