Small businesses joining forces in AI play

MindPetal and VerticalApps aim to create a larger provider of artificial intelligence solutions across the government market.

A pair of small businesses in Northern Virginia will join forces with MindPetalsigning an agreement to acquire VertcalApps.

Terms of the transaction announced Tuesday were not disclosed, but the companies expect to close by Nov. 1.

Vienna, Virginia-headquartered MindPetal is looking to bolster its offerings in intelligent automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning through the acquisition. MindPetal also adding a new chief operating officer, chief financial officer and senior vice president for program delivery.

Those executives are all slated to join from VerticalApps – Will Choi (COO), Paul Grace (CFO) and Michael Grace (SVP of delivery). Choi is a co-founder of Arlington, Virginia-headquartered VerticalApps.

"VerticalApps brings an experienced team with deep expertise and superlative past performance that will accelerate our growth and deliver immediate value to our federal customers,” MindPetal CEO Sony George said in a release.

VerticalApps also brings to MindPetal work with the Homeland Security Department, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, National Institutes of Health, Army Corps of Engineers and the Health Resources and Services Administration.
