Cisco, Harris team on SMArT-1

Secure Mobile Architecture Type 1 to speed wireless networks installation for feds

Harris and Cisco are teaming up to speed the installation of Type 1 secure wireless networks for federal intelligence and civilian agencies, company officials announced this week. Type 1 wireless devices meet federal requirements for data confidentiality, user and device authentication and intrusion detection.

The companies will join forces on the Secure Mobile Architecture Type 1 (SMArT-1), a project that will increase the ability of federal agencies to view and share classified data over wireless networks, company officials said.

"In the past, Type 1 wireless solutions were limited at the federal level due to policy mandates for wireless networking and other protocols governing access to classified data," said Richard Rzepkowski, vice president of communications security products at Harris RF Communications.

Harris RF Communications will provide its SecNet54, a modular wireless encryption device that offers Type 1 security up to and including top secret. Harris IT Services will offer installation and maintenance.

Cisco will provide routers, controllers and other networking equipment, as well as networking design and engineering services.
