Here is a roundup of current and proposed grants that could become available for first responders.

Current

The Public Safety Interoperable Communications Fund - $1B

Authorized by the 2006 Call Home

Act. Funds must be allocated by Sept. 30.

Iraq War Supplemental

$100M for mass-transit security

$100M for port security

Proposed

2008 DHS Appropriations Act

Approved by the House Appropriations Committee but still pending in
the House.

$4.52 billion for state and local, $2 billion more than White House request
and $863 million more than 2007 enacted allocation.

Funding in the bill:

$950 million in state and law enforcement grants, $700 million more than White House request and $50 million more than 2007 enacted.

$800 million for urban areas, $30 million more than White House request and 2007 enacted.

$800 million for fire departments, $500 million more than White House request and $138 million more than 2007 enacted.

$400 million for port security, $190 million more than White House request
and 2007 enacted.

$400 million for transit security, $225 million more than White House request and 2007 enacted.

$300 million for emergency management grants, $100 million more than White House request and 2007 enacted.
