Inside Track: New Federal Projects

Tech assistance for Peru

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency wants a contractor to Peru's Ministry of Transportation and Communications for technical assistance in developing a national telecommunications strategic plan. The project will help the ministry reach its goals, based on reaching specific targets by 2009, for modernizing the country's telecom sector.

Targets will be set for teledensity, the number of communities with service, rural service, public telephone access, information society measures, Internet access, customer service and the transition to new technologies such as IP networks, fiber-optics and wireless. Proposals must be submitted in English and Spanish. Responses are due by Feb. 16. Contact Evangela Kunene at ekunene@ustda.gov.

Army wants UAV sensors

As part of the Military Applications in Reconnaissance and Surveillance project, the Army wants unmanned aerial vehicle sensor packages to detect toxic industrial chemical agents used during warfare.

The project will build on technology to provide a framework that integrates sensors into airframes and gives soldiers the aerial-based tools they need. Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear sensing capabilities will increase an operational commander's ability to quickly detect and assess these threats. Until now, no UAV-based sensor packages for toxic industrial chemicals have been used operationally.

The proposed fixed-price contract is for one year with four one-year options.
