DISA seeks industry input on SATCOM awareness tools

The Defense Information Systems Agency is intent on better defining the scope of its satellite communications ordering, management and situational awareness tools.

DISA officials released a request for information to get industry’s input on identifying relevant and realistic requirements.

This so-called "SOMSAT" effort has a phased implementation. The first phase is an initial deployment to address gaps, including a security and situational awareness framework. The results will be the basis for the next phase.

Currently, the SATCOM provisioning process lacks automation and can’t keep pace with adaptations, DISA says. The agency also believes that process doesn’t interact with other joint planning systems or quickly provide operational awareness.

DISA has questions on:

• Near real-time ordering and provisioning
• Visibility and coordination globally
• End-to-end service delivery
• Predictive analysis of network capacity and requirements
• Mobility and continuous communications connectivity
• Automated resource allocation
• Continuity of operations
• Automated resource allocation

DISA released the RFI Aug. 30. Responses are due by Sept. 7.
