L-3 creates senior VP post to strengthen business strategy
Air Force vet, industry pro named to oversee operating objectives, including technical plans.
L-3 Communications has named David Van Buren senior vice president of business strategy, a newly created position.
He will focus on the strategic execution of L-3’s operating objectives, including its technical plans and strengthening the company’s position in an era of shifting defense and national security priorities, the April 18 company announcement said.
Van Buren reports to Curtis Brunson, L-3’s executive vice president of corporate strategy and development.
Van Buren has more than 30 years of leadership and management experience in government, large defense corporations, and small and medium aerospace and commercial high-technology firms.
He served on active duty in the Air Force for nine years, finishing his career as a captain.
Most recently, he served as the company's Air Force service acquisition executive and before that he was an executive for numerous private equity-owned high technology firms.
He also has held leadership and program management positions at Raytheon Co., as well as the heritage companies of Northrop Grumman Corp. and Lockheed Martin Corp..
Van Buren has a bachelor's degree in physical science from the University of Illinois and a master's degree in industrial management from Central Michigan University.
L-3 Communications Corp., of McLean, Va., ranks No. 8 on Washington Technology’s 2011 Top 100 list of the largest federal government contractors.
