Weather contract canceled for second look

National Weather Service wants to rethink its approach to the NextGen 4-D Weather Data Cube project.
The National Weather Service is delaying a contract to build the next-generation weather data system so it can combine several related initiatives into one program.
The agency has canceled the NextGen 4-D Weather Data Cube IT project. It released a draft request for proposals for that contract in July.
As it works to combine NextGen with the other initiatives, the weather service wants to meet with interested companies over the next few months to demonstrate its technology. From these meetings, the agency said it would develop a market survey.
After that, the weather service would hold a industry day.

One of the goals of the canceled contract was to supply weather data to support the Federal Aviation Administration’s Next Generation Air Transportation System. Other users of the data include the Defense Department.
No timeline for the new contract has been released. A dollar value of the contract also is not available.
