Apptis sold to San Francisco technology firm

URS Corp. is acquiring Apptis Inc. for a net purchase price of approximately $260 million in cash.

The acquisition does not include Apptis’ Iron Bow reseller subsidiary, which will continue to operate as an independent, stand-alone company, a April 27 announcement said.

In 2010, Apptis had revenues of $298.2 million, according to the announcement.

Apptis, which is majority-owned by affiliates of New Mountain Capital, provides high-end IT services to the Defense Department, including all four branches of the military and the Defense Information Systems Agency.

The company’s clients also include the Transportation, Justice and Homeland Security departments.

Apptis specializes in high-end professional IT services, which are expected to be among the highest growth areas in the broader federal IT market. These services include network management, software engineering, IT infrastructure design and implementation, identity management, cyber defense and cloud computing technologies.

Apptis was an early entrant into the emerging market of cloud computing technologies, which federal agencies are increasingly using to reduce operating costs.

“Apptis will complement the current engineering, construction and technical services that we provide to federal agencies and broaden our opportunities with existing and new clients,” Randall Wotring, president of URS’ Federal Services business, said in the announcement.

“This transaction will allow us to rapidly extend our range and depth of leading capabilities to include the full life cycle of services URS offers, to serve our customers in increasingly more significant ways on a global scale,” added Bert Notini, Apptis CEO.

URS, of San Francisco, has approximately 47,000 employees in more than 40 countries. The company specializes in program management; planning, design and engineering; systems engineering and technical assistance; construction and construction management;

URS’ clients include the federal government, national governments of other countries, state and local government agencies.

The acquisition is expected to close in approximately 60 days, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

Last month, URS won a $35 million contract to provide technical and research services to the Risk Reduction Division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration.
