Small businesses score as Air Force reopens $3B contract

Big-ticket Air Force award gives small businesses another round at an acquisition-related contract.

Small businesses are getting another crack at a $3 billion opportunity as the Air Force plans to reopen a lucrative contract, The Washington Post reported.

The small-business-only contract, worth about $3 billion over five years, provides acquisition-related services to commands such as the Aeronautical Systems Center in Ohio, the Post reported. The center designs, develops and delivers aerospace weapon systems and capabilities for the U.S. Air Force and other U.S. military, allied and coalition-partner warfighters, according to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base website.

The contract is known as the Consolidated Acquisition of Professional Services 2 contract, or CAPS 2.

Several of the incumbents that were awarded the big-ticket contract in 2006 no longer carry a small-business label, leaving openings, said Ashley Bergander, manager of federal programs for FedSources.

Amber Robinson, an Air Force analyst for Input, a company that studies the federal contracting markets, said almost 900 subscribers have already shown interest in the opportunity, according to the Post.

The Air Force plans to make an award in September.
