SAIC adds virtual world software to simulations portfolio

SAIC has acquired a software product line from Forterra Systems Inc. that offers users an interactive virtual environment in which to collaborate, train and learn. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The purchase will enable SAIC to continue enhancing the On-Line Interactive Virtual Environment (OLIVE) software platform and to expand its simulation business, company officials said today. Significantly, the purchase adds an established, branded platform to SAIC’s simulations portfolio, they said.

OLIVE enables users to deploy their own persistent and secure 3D virtual worlds in which to collaborate via networked computers, the officials said. Collaboration is achieved in the virtual setting through use of life-like human avatars. The platform supports financial, services, health care, government and other markets.

Twelve employees from Forterra will join SAIC as part of the deal. These employees will become part of the company’s Analysis, Simulations, Systems Engineering and Training business unit led by Bev Seay. The new employees will support the software platform from San Mateo, Calif., and Orlando, Fla.

SAIC ranks No. 7 on Washington Technology’s 2009 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
