EF Johnson wins two DOD radio contracts

EF Johnson Technologies Inc. will provide two-way radios and accessories to the Defense Department under two contracts worth nearly $10 million.

EF Johnson Technologies Inc. will provide two-way radios and accessories to the Defense Department under two contracts worth nearly $10 million, according to the Irving, Texas-based company.

The company received a $1.2 million order for its Project 25-compliant two-way radios and accessories. The company also won a contract worth $8.6 million to provide accessories for the Project 25 compliant two-way radios that are already deployed.

Project 25 is a suite of standards for digital radios.

“The over-the-air programming capability of these radios enables you to provision new radio personalities without having to send the radios to a service shop,” said Michael Jalbert, president and chief executive officer of EF Johnson. “Radios are programmed over the air, which saves considerable time and administrative costs.”

Over the past five years, the EF Johnson has provided approximately 80,000 radios to DOD, company officials said.

The accessories the company will provide under the new contract include batteries and chargers.

“Among the batteries specified in this contract is the lithium ion battery, a ruggedized battery that provides a longer battery life and is 5 ounces lighter in weight than the standard nickel metal hydride battery resulting in a 20 percent lighter radio,” Jalbert said.
