L-1 wins contract to boost security of Calif. driver's licenses

L-1 Identity Solutions has won a new five-year, $62.8 million contract from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to continue providing secure driver's license solutions.

Under the contract, L-1's Secure Credentialing division will furnish to the department new workflow processes and technologies to improve the integrity of the process used to issue and secure driver's licenses, company officials said today. 

The contact includes two, two-year extensions options that could add $45.8 million to the contract's value for a potential total value of $108.6 million.

California will add new workflow processes and technologies from L-1 to prevent fraud and ensure the integrity throughout the issuance process. The new features include using fingerprint verifications to ensure that the person who initiates the application is the same individual who completes each step of the process.

The state also is integrating operator fingerprint logon and application branding to identify the DMV operator responsible for processing each applicant at the camera station.

The enhancements are also designed to make the licenses as tamper-proof as possible.

L-1 is based in Stamford, Conn.
