IBM to cut 5,000 jobs, but government sector unaffected

IBM plans to cut about 5,000 jobs and began informing employees March 25, according to a Washington Post report.

The cuts are not expected to affect IBM’s government work, which is a growing business area for the company, the Post reported.

IBM officials declined to comment to the Post or to Washington Technology.

The Post reported that IBM is shifting work to other regions such as India where wages are lower.

IBM is ranked No. 16 on Washington Technology’s 2008 Top 100 list of the largest federal prime contractors.
