Unisys checks in for DOD health care work

Unisys Corp. won a five-year, $42 million contract to configure commercial software solutions for billing and accounts receivable operations within the Defense Department.

The software package will help the Military Health System's enterprisewide Medical Treatment Facilities with billing and reconciling individual beneficiary and patient accounts. Moreover, the software will allow military health facilities to bill for inpatient and outpatient services and collect payments from third parties, as do insurance companies.

Military health facilities currently have limited success billing insurance companies as the current DOD solution does not meet health care market expectations for billing details and compliance with a number of commercial requirements.

The new software also will be designed to work with a variety of military health legacy systems as well as newly implemented solutions, such as an enterprisewide DOD electronic health records system.

The system-wide changes will enable a next generation of revenue cycle management operations and practices, the company said.

Unisys of Blue Bell, Pa., has about 36,000 employees and had annual revenue of $5.8 billion in fiscal 2005. The company ranks No. 20 on Washington Technology's 2006 Top 100 list of the largest federal IT contractors.
