Making good on a promise CGI Group Inc. made when it bought American Management Systems Inc. in May 2004, the Montreal-based company this month changed the name of its U.S. subsidiary from CGI-AMS Inc. to CGI Inc.

CGI Group announced at the time of the purchase that it intended to drop AMS from its subsidiary's name within two years.

The company's U.S. subsidiary had 33 percent of CGI Group's worldwide $3.1 billion revenue in fiscal 2006. CGI Group has more than 25,000 employees, of which 7,0000 are based in the United States.

CGI Group acquired AMS for $858 million in 2004. But Arlington, Va.-based CACI International Inc. subsequently bought AMS' Defense and Intelligence Group for $415 million. So CGI Group really bought AMS' commercial and nondefense government business for $443 million.

CGI, an IT and business process services firm based in Fairfax, Va., has a stronghold in Virginia. In October, CGI won a five-year, $65 million contract renewal to host, maintain and operate the Old Dominion's Web-based procurement portal.

In January, the company won a seven-year, $300 million contract to implement enterprise applications across the state's business and IT systems. CGI ranks No. 53 on Washington Technology's 2006 Top 100 list the largest government IT contractors.
