Raytheon cruises into $229M Florida toll deal

Raytheon Co. will deliver an electronic toll collection system to the Florida Turnpike Enterprise through a 10-year, $229 million contract.

Raytheon of Waltham, Mass., will supply equipment, a central processing and audit system, and open-road tolling technology.

The company expects to complete the work in four years, after which it will remain under contract for another six years for related work.

"This contract continues our leadership in global transportation and security solutions," said Andy Zogg, Raytheon's vice president of Airspace Management and Homeland Security.

The company operates more than 220 polling points on three continents, he said.

The Florida Turnpike Enterprise manages a 612-mile system of limited-access toll highways. The toll system is a hybrid of lane-based cash and electronic equipment. The mainline turnpike runs through 11 counties north of Miami and joins with Interstate 75 in central Florida. The turnpike agency also owns and operates other toll road systems in various parts of the state.

Raytheon has about 80,000 employees and had annual sales of $21.9 billion in 2005. The company ranks No. 6 on Washington Technology's 2006 Top 100 list of the largest federal IT contractors.
