Symbol Technologies finishes Army IED countermeasure work

Symbol Technologies Inc. completed a $10 million task order as a subcontractor to GTSI Corp. in support of an Army project to help defeat remote-controlled improvised explosive devices, or roadside bombs, for soldiers serving abroad.

The work was for the Counter Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices initiative, in which Symbol MC70 mobile computers are being used.

"With a Symbol MC70, Coalition Forces are now provided with a rugged and reliable mobile computer capable of offering communications, situational awareness and mission support at the edge of the wireless network," said William Hartwell, vice president of the federal government area of Symbol Technologies.

Symbol of Holtsville, NY., is a provider of enterprise mobility solutions that integrate data capture products, radio frequency identification technology, mobile computing platforms, wireless infrastructure and mobility software.

The company has about 5,200 employees and had annual sales of $1.7 billion in fiscal 2005, according to Hoover's Online of Austin, Texas.
