Air Force chief of staff Jumper to retire

The Air Force has announced that Gen. John Jumper is retiring after 39 years of service. He has served as the service's chief of staff since September 2001.

There will be a ceremony Sept. 2 at Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs, Md., for his retirement and to swear in his replacement, Gen. T. Michael Moseley, who currently serves as vice chief of staff.

Jumper earned his commission as a graduate of Virginia Military Institute's ROTC program in 1966. He has commanded a fighter squadron, two fighter wings and U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Allied Air Forces Central Europe. Prior to becoming chief of staff, he served as commander of Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base, Va.

Moseley was named vice chief of staff in August 2003. In his most recent previous assignment, he was commander, 9th Air Force and U.S. Central Command Air Forces, at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
