Computer Associates to buy security vendor

Computer Associates International Inc. will acquire identity management company Netegrity Inc. for about $430 million in cash. The companies expect to close the deal in 90 days.

Waltham, Mass.-based Netegrity develops software for controlling access to IT networks. Its products are deployed at the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Internal Revenue Service and other federal, state and local agencies.

Kenneth Cron, Computer Associates' chief executive officer, said the acquisition would strengthen the company's identity and access management portfolio. Netegrity's operations will be integrated with Computer Associates' eTrust Identity and Access Management group.

"Our customers are looking to reduce costs, increase productivity and provide secure environments for their businesses," said Russ Artzt, Computer Associates' executive vice president for eTrust Solutions, in a statement. "A secure environment starts with access management, which is why it is critically important to have the best solution."

With more than $75 million in 2003 prime federal IT revenue, and $31 billion in total revenue, Computer Associates ranks No. 79 on Washington Technology's 2004 Top 100 list.
