Microsoft names new public-sector chief

Microsoft Corp. yesterday announced that Gerri Elliott will be the new corporate vice president of its Worldwide Public Sector group, replacing Maggie Wilderotter.

Elliott joined Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft in 2001 after 22 years at IBM Corp. In her new role, Elliott will be responsible for promoting the adoption of Microsoft solutions in government agencies and educational institutions around the world. She will coordinate efforts across the company's product areas to develop programs and solutions specific to the public sector.

Wilderotter leaves Microsoft to lead Citizens Communications Co., a Stamford, Conn., provider of telecommunications services to small towns and rural areas.
