Canning first joined Deloitte in 1988 and has held several executive positions. He most recently served as managing director of the strategy and operations practice with Deloitte Consulting. He has been on the board of Deloitte US since 2017.

"Mike's role as the new government and public services leader is the perfect example of how we bring together people from both the public and private sectors to help solve our clients' most difficult challenges," Helfrich said in a release Monday.

The government and public services practice has nearly 15,000 employees that work with federal and state agencies.

A major focus of Canning's will be on human-centered design and helping government clients get closer to citizens.

“What drives innovation is figuring out what best motivates, connects or engages a citizen,” Canning said. “The more we concentrate on what impacts the citizen, the more our clients, and in turn, the citizen will benefit."
