Northrop Grumman wins $5M contract for polar ice breakers

Company has supported polar ice breaking since 1999

Northrop Grumman has won a five-year, $5 million contract to provide the U.S. Coast Guard with navigation systems and software to support polar ice breakers.

Polar ice breakers are used to clear pathways for supply ships and support research missions, Northrop said in a release.

The contract will support the Polar Star and the Healy, both of which are Coast Guard vessels.

Under the contract, Northrop Grumman will supply hardware configuration management, remote technical support and training classes, and will participate in the  maintenance performed on the two ice breakers prior to each polar deployment, the company said.

Work will be performed in Charlottesville, Va., and on the two Coast Guard vessels.

Northrop Grumman has supported the Coast Guard’s polar ice breakers since 1999.
