Aging workers drive outsourcing

The number of federal IT workers 50 years of age and older will increase steadily during the next few years from 38 percent in fiscal 2003 to 45 percent by fiscal 2008, according to a new report by market research firm Input Inc., Reston, Va.

The federal IT workforce tends to be older than that of the private sector, creating the potential for severe shortages across all government IT competencies, the report said.

Consequently, the "Aging Federal IT Workforce: Trends and Solutions" report predicts, agencies will rely more on outsourcing to fill vacancies and shortfalls.
