Austal USA has won a $14 million option from the Navy to continue its support of the littoral combat ship program.

The company has been known to sub out work related to littoral combat ships to General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems.

Under the option, Austal USA will assess engineering and production challenges, as well as evaluate the cost and schedule risks from affordability efforts to reduce littoral combat ship acquisition and lifecycle costs, the Defense Department said.

Work will be performed in Mobile, Ala., and Pittsfield, Mass., and is expected to be completed by November 2014.
