L-1 wins pair of driver's licensing extensions

L-1 Identity Solutions won contract extensions totaling $20 million from Illinois and North Carolina to produce secure digital driver's licenses.

L-1 Identity Solutions Inc. won contract extensions totaling $20 million from Illinois and North Carolina to produce secure digital driver's licenses.

The contracts are extensions of existing agreements between the states and Viisage, the Secure Credentialing Division of Stamford, Conn.-based L-1 Identity Solutions.

Under the Illinois contract, L-1 will provide a digital driver's license issuance system and associated technologies. The state expects to produce more than 3.6 million cards annually using advanced credentialing and facial biometric technology from L-1 Identity Solutions.

The contract is a three-year extension of an existing agreement signed 10 years ago between the Illinois office of the Secretary of State and Viisage. Through the agreement, L-1 Identity Solutions is responsible for the enrollment of applicant information, printing and personalization of driver's licenses and facial recognition capabilities. The company also supplies associated hardware, software and printing products, as well as a secure inventory management system for the state.

The contract with North Carolina is a 12-month extension of an existing agreement also signed 10 years ago through which L-1's Secure Credentialing Division provides North Carolina with similar services to those set forth in the Illinois contract.
