Could Google's CEO take over at Commerce?

Is Google CEO Eric Schmidt in line to become the next commerce secretary?

According to Hayley Tsukayama, writing in the Washington Post's Post Tech blog, he may well be.

"Buzz has been building for the past week that Schmidt is being seriously considered as a candidate for the administration post once he leaves the company in April, after a decade at Google’s helm," Tsukayama writes. "Google co-founder Larry Page will step in as CEO this spring. Schmidt recently secured a nod from former Reagan administration Commerce Department Counsel Clyde Prestowitz. Prestowitz, whose endorsement could signal bipartisan support, said in a Foreign Policy piece that he would 'wholeheartedly urge President Obama to move ahead with this appointment.' ”

The Obama administration recently announced that current Commerce Secretary Gary Locke is leaving that post to serve as U.S. ambassador to China.

What's that I hear ringing in my ears---REPEATEDLY?? "Cheney and Haliburton"! "Cheney and Haliburton"! "Cheney and Haliburton"! Who cares if Cheney divested himself completely of Haliburton stock prior to taking office. Those pesky little FACTS keep getting in the way for the lefties so they tend to ignore them as I am sure they will ignore this blatant COI. And let's not mention that GOOGLE has done more to violate personal privacy than ANY program the government has ever had---including the much lied about "homeland wire tapping" President Bush put in place and Obama continues. (In case you're interested, there's a difference between "wire tapping" which the program never did without proper judicial review, and "MONITORING" which is done every day by almost every employer out there.

Eric Schmidt at Commerce could be a great appointment!

Given that Google was raising compensation for its employees at the same time Obama was freezing ours, I'd welcome Eric Schmidt into the administration. Maybe he can teach Obama the value of treating your employees with respect, instead of using them as pawns to be sacrificed when you need to pretend to be fiscally responsible.

And what would Eric Schmidt do with all of his Google Shares that are worth something in the neighborhood of exceeding a $1B? Would he need to put them in trust? Would he have to sell them? What will the government do with the anticipated contracts under cosideration with Google. I am not sure that the Obama administration has looked into all of the COI issues.

Instead of hand selecting a candidate, post the positiion on to allow every citizen the opportunity to apply.
