NGA nearly complete with $2B Janus program

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency is nearly complete in getting one of its largest IT-related acquisitions out the door through a series of contract awards under its "Janus" initiative.

Janus is NGA's effort to access near-real time, commercial content including crowd- and community-sourced data in an unclassified cloud computing environment.

According to Deltek data, NGA has six total contract opportunities for Janus that have a combined ceiling value of $1.92 billion. Four have been awarded to date and those have a combined ceiling value of $1.84 billion, all over up to 10 years.

Ten companies won the potential $920 million Janus Geography track awarded May 18 to help NGA manage and use geospatial data. Seven took spots on the potential $250 million Janus Geomatics Elevation piece also awarded on May 18 to help maintain digital elevation models.

NGA also awarded Janus' "Geomatics Precise Imagery" and small business-only "Aeronautical Feature Data" portions, respectively on April 20 and also May 18.

The potential $350 million imagery contract covers content management services to support the collection of new data and targeted maintenance of existing data holdings. NGA awarded that contract to BAE Systems Inc., Harris Corp. and Ratheon Spares.

BAE's U.S. arm and Harris have spots on all three full-and-open contracts awarded so far, while Leidos has a position on the geography and elevation pieces.

The $350 million aeronautical track supports safe navigation to airfields and through vertical obstructions. Continental Mapping Associates, Lowe Engineers and T-Kartor USA will bid for task orders.

Two other Janus awards are outstanding: a $70 million "Maritime Safety" piece and a $10 million "Maritime Tactical Ocean Data" track. Those are due to be awarded in August and have periods of performance of up to five years, according to Deltek data.

The awarded Janus contracts started their periods of performance on May 29.
