HPE books $57M in Air Force, Navy supercomputer contracts

Hewlett Packard Enterprise books $57 million in contract awards to supply supercomputers to the Air Force Research Laboratory and Navy.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise has won a pair of contract awards worth up to $57 million combined over five years to deliver supercomputers and related services to the Air Force Research Laboratory and Navy.
Both contracts are in support of the Defense Department’s High Performance Computing Modernization Program to accelerate the development and acquisition of supercomputers for use in national security.
AFRL’s DOD Supercomputing Resource Center will get four of the HPE SGI 8600 systems and the Navy’s DSRC will take in three of those platforms, HPE said Tuesday.
The systems at ARFL are intended to support research into hypersonics and development of computational models of air, naval and ground weapons. Systems at the Navy DSRC will be used to support advanced weapons and the branch’s global weather models.
HPE designed the SGI 8600 for domains such as the life, earth and space sciences; engineering; manufacturing; and national security.
HPE extended its supercomputing footprint in 2016 with the acquisition of SGI for close to $275 million.
