Raytheon nabs $8M contract to developer smarter bullets

Raytheon has won a $8 million contract to support the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Multi Azimuth Defense Fast Intercept Round Engagement System (MAD-FIRES) program.

The goal of the MAD-FIRES program is to design and develop technologies associated with a medium-caliber guided projectile that would combine the guidance, precision and accuracy generally afforded by missiles with the speed, rapid-fire capability and large ammunition capacity afforded by bullets, DARPA said on its website.

Under the contract, Raytheon will focus on projectile development and performance, the Defense Department said in a release.

Work will be performed in Tucson, Ariz., Chelmsford, Mass., and McKinney, Texas, and is expected to be completed in March 2018.
