IT consolidation and modernization efforts are top of mind for government organizations, but these efforts often bring with them security challenges that need to be addressed.

According to SolarWinds’ third annual Federal Cybersecurity Survey, almost half—48 percent—of respondents said that IT consolidation and modernization efforts have resulted in an increase in IT security challenges.

The reasons for the increase are because transitions are incomplete (48 percent), enterprise management tools are too complex (46 percent) and there is a lack of familiarity with new systems (44 percent).

It is not always easy improving security. Of the respondents, 29 percent cited budget constraints as hindering security improvement. Respondents also pointed to complexity of internal environments (16 percent) and inadequate collaboration with other internal teams (12 percent) as being obstacles.

The good news is that 51 percent of respondents said they see their organization’s investment in security tools increasing in 2016. Thirty-three percent said they see it staying the same.
